Age Of Faith
William Bradford 1620-1647 from Of Plymouth Plantation
What does it mean to be an American at this time?
At that time to be an American is to have a desire for
freedom, the desire to spread Christianity
Thesis
In the excerpt from Of Plymouth Plantation William Bradford
employs references to Grace and divine mission to inspire the people to take
the journey to the new land in order to escape oppression, be comforted by
God's care and to honor their moral duty to spread Christianity.
Passage
"..some preferred and chose the prisons in England
rather than this liberty in Holland with these afflictions."
I chose this passage, because it shows how some of the
people would rather live in jail than live in Holland.
Journal Entry
Year 1620
I've been on this ship for a couple days now. I’m trying to adjust to life on a ship. I am 1 out of the 120 pilgrims on the Mayflower. The owner of the ship is Christopher Jones, a British man. I am also British, born in England. I am now 15 years old, old enough to understand most things in life. I’m actually quite excited to see what they called the New World. I wonder what it looks like and if its different from the old world.
Sometimes the ride would be horrible and frightening, like when the waves would crash against the ships topside and it even fractured the structural support. By now there have been two deaths. The days were slow and I had nothing to do, just watch the water below our ship. The worst part is that there is like no space.
I do know that we went to a place called Cape Cod, they call it the fishhook. Mother said that we were inside of the tip. Seeing land made me feel better. I’m glad I don’t get sea sick like my sister who is 12. I’m running out of space so I’m going to end this entry here till I can get another piece of paper to write on.

Anne Bradstreet "Upon the Burning of my House", "To My Dear and Loving Husband"
What does it mean it mean to be an American?
To be an American means to trust the Grace of God and go with the flow of life. Do not ask for things to happen, because whatever happens happens because it pleases God.
Thesis
In the piece "Upon the Burning of my House" Anne Bradstreet includes references to God and the beliefs of the people by putting on the view of having to get over a painful loss and not asking for anything from god because it is Puritan.
In this exert "To My Dear and Loving Husband" Anne Bradstreet illustrates two people in love and living in love "forever", never dying.
Passage
"My love is such that Rivers cAnneot quench," I like this hyperbole, because it has meaning to it. It explains that their affection for each other is tremendous, like it cannot even quench rivers. Its bigger than rivers and cannot satisfy enough water for rivers.
Poem
Political Cartoon
The political cartoon above represents that Puritans had strict beliefs. They believed that whatever happened to them happened because it pleased God. This is similar to "Upon the Burning of my House" because the author shows how you shouldn't ask for something from God. In the poem the character had asked God for her house to not burn, it was a terrible loss, but she had to go through it. It is what God had wanted.
from Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God
Why is God angry?
God is angry with the people that do not believe in him. The ones who don't repent go o Hell.
Why should sinners be scared?
Because if they go to Hell, many bad and painful things will happen to them. Like burning in fire, having no choice but to bear the pain.
Thesis
In "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" Jonathan Edwards uses imagery, personification and repetition to emphasize his point. His point is to scare the people and make them want to repent. He uses fire, flooding, spiders and a bow to help show his point. He makes Hell seem alive which is use of personification.
Journal Entry
I think that
humans now are more afraid of death. People put police and security guards in
places necessary to prevent attacks. Also they check people and their items a
couple times at the airport before they enter the plane and the lock the doors
to the front of the plane where the pilots are .It doesn't seem so much with
environmental impacts but for me, I’m afraid of death. Death is just a scary
thing. Leaving loved ones and missing out. I want to grow up and live my life.
But you have to live everyday like you’re going to die the next. It’s scary,
because you don’t even know when or how. And the way you die is scary and unpredictable.
It can happen in second or slow/ painfully. I would maybe write a letter to Obama or make
a twitter and post tweets about dangerous situations. I think people should
also use less electricity, water, not litter, carpool and Recycle! To me that’s
the biggest one, I always try to recycle. These affect the environment and in
the future can cause the coastlines to be underwater due to global warming and
melting of glaciers.

Questions
1) DO YOU NOTICE A PROGRESSION of IMAGES? PLEASE DESCRIBE. WHAT POINT IS HE MAKING THROUGH IMAGERY?
- The images go from flames, floods, Spiders and God’s bow. The point is Hell and the horrible things that will happen to people who go there and don’t repent.
2) WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES THIS TEXT PERSUASIVE?
- The repetition, which emphasizes fear and the choice of words are scary and adjectives. Personification also effects the text because it makes things seem real and more frightful.
3) MANY IN HIS CONGREGATION WERE SAID TO HAVE FAINTED AND
CRIED OUT AS HE DELIVERED HIS SERMON.
WHAT PARTS OF THE SERMON DO YOU BELIEVE MIGHT HAVE EVOKED SUCH A
RESPONSE?
- “There is nothing between you and Hell but the air; it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds to you.
- “The wrath of God is like great waters that are dammed for the present; they increase more and more, and rise higher and higher, till an outlet is given; and the longer the stream is stopped, the more rapid and mighty is its course, when once it is let loose.”
- “He will have no regard to your welfare, nor be at all careful lest you should suffer too much in any other sense, than only that you should suffer too much in any other case.
- “It would be dreadful to suffer the fierceness of Almighty God one moment; but you must suffer it to all eternity.”
4) WHAT are the most
prominent themes communicated by THE images USED?
- The most prominent themes are flames, floods, God’s bow and spider webs.
5) How are listeners meant to feel?
- Listeners are meant to feel horrified, fearful and terrified.
6) Edwards
communicates the danger of death and damnation that faces the unconverted. What
might his listeners think would preserve the wicked? How does Edwards counter
these assumptions?
Listeners might think that repenting to God would reserve
the wicked. Edwards just telling people the horrible scary things that happens
in Hell and that they should want to be kept out of Hell.
Quote
"You hang by a slender tread, with the flames of divine wrath flashing about it,….nothing to keep off the flames of wrath, nothing of your own, nothing that you ever have done, nothing that you can do, to induce God to spare you one moment.”
1.Here, the image Edwards creates a vivid image that you have no choice but to burn in the flames of God’s wrath.
2. Edwards is also using figurative language because he emphasizes what could happen “you hang by a slender thread with flames” to “nothing that you can do” .
3. The point he is making is that you cannot fight God back. You have to deal with the consequences not matter what.
4. The most important reason to analyze a writer’s usage of imagery and figurative is to recognize how it contributes to the point he is trying to make or the effect he is attempting to create.
5. This is true whether the writer is Jonathan Edwards attempting to inspire terror in the hearts of his audience or a teacher trying to explain the importance of paying attention in class.

Olaudah Equiano
Favorite Passage
"I became so sick and low that I was not able to eat, nor had I the least desire to taste any thing. I now wished for the last friend, Death, to relieve me;"
I like this passage because it shows how someone would rather die than be on the ships. The person was sick and couldnt eat so he wanted death to free him for his uncomfortableness.
Thesis
"Olaudah Equiano" takes place during slavery. The author, explains how life was o the ships on the middle passage. He explains the hardships and unfairness. He gives the reader an understanding or image of how life was like.
Political Cartoon
This cartoon shows someone about to be hung for his color. In my opinion this is horrible. But The quote is saying that in the future white people will be apologizing to the African Americans. Its like his death wont affect anyone. And the people in the background are watching like it is something interesting.

My poem “Black Hawk” is similar to “A
Red Wheelbarrow” because they both are imagist poems. The speaker of my poem is
Jim, from “My Antonia”, he is remembering the first time he went to Black Hawk
and in “A Red Wheelbarrow” the speaker is remembering something from the past.
The theme of both poems is remembrance, they both remember something from the
past and creates an image of it. Both of the poems were imagist poems, which is
a style of poetry where only images are used but they are powerful. Also both
of the poems have syntax which is word arrangement to create well-formed
sentences, they give space for the reader to think. The tone for both of the
poems is nostalgia which is looking back into the past with fondness.
